Me-Made-May ’16: Summary

Well, I have another Me-Made-May under my belt. Even though this is my third time participating, I was a little apprehensive going into it, due to feelings of insufficiency and guilt. Luckily, Me-Made-May helped me work through those issues, and I ended the month with more clarity and inspiration than I had when I started.

First, let’s talk about the feelings of insufficiency. From June 2015-April 2016, I sewed ten garments for myself, and of those ten, five were failures. In that same timeframe, a couple of my older garments fell victim to laundry mishaps, and I misplaced another. As a result, I only had net two good new garments for this year’s Me-Made-May. It didn’t feel like enough and I was worried about boring the community with repeats from the previous year. However, while participating in Me-Made-May this year, I came to a realization. It’s okay that most of my clothes were repeats from the previous year. Yes, I’ve been wearing the same Wiksten tanks that I made in 2013 and 2014. I like them, and I’m going to keep wearing them until they wear out. The idea of wearing things until they wear out brings us to the next topic: my feelings of guilt around fast fashion.

People sew garments for a variety of reasons. I started doing it because I hated shopping for clothes for my postpartum body. I keep doing it because I enjoy the challenge of improving my sewing skills, feel more confident wearing clothes I made myself, and find deep satisfaction in finishing a project. However, other people sew garments for different reasons, such as combating fast fashion. Since I’ve joined the handmade wardrobe movement, I have read countless blog posts and articles about the evils of fast fashion. As a result, I’ve felt increasingly guilty about not having a 100% me-made wardrobe. I’ve also felt guilty about wanting to sew more and more clothes, because it felt like that desire to sew more was too close to the desire to buy more that fuels fast fashion and the runaway consumerism that the slow fashion movement is trying to fight against. When I had the realization that I like wearing my old garments year over year, I also realized that it was okay to want to sew more, since everything I sewed meant I consume less overall. Sewing my own clothes has made me a more mindful and cautious consumer. When I buy read-to-wear, I only buy what is really needed to look presentable at work and be comfortable during different seasons. Since I spend so much time and effort sewing my clothes, each piece is treasured. When it comes time to discard a handmade garment, I feel a sadness that I never felt with ready-to-wear items. Yes, I want to sew more, but what I sew will eventually wear out, and overall, I consume less.

This year, Me-Made-May inspired me to get past my garment sewing failures and keep sewing things that I enjoy without guilt. Of the three garments I made in May, yes, one was a failure, but it was a failure that I learned from that will help make me a better seamstress going forward. I’m not going to feel guilty that I “wasted” fabric, because the value was in the lesson learned, not the physical object. I am excited to sew clothes again, even though I know that there will still be failures from time to time. I will learn from those failures and be better for it.

Now that the philosophical musings are out of the way, let’s look at the stats. This May, I wore twenty-nine different me-made garments. Of those twenty-nine, the three most worn pieces were my Basic Black Julia Cardigan, Navy Julia Cardigan, and Basic Black Aberdeen Tunic. The three most frequently worn patterns were the Julia Cardigan, the Aberdeen Tunic and the Akita Blouse.

Based on what I learned during Me-Made-May this year, I plan to make more basic pieces in solid colors, especially black. I will also make the occasional unnecessary pattern just for the joy of it, or to learn new skills. For summer, I could use more skirts, and another dress or two. In a perfect world I would make some shorts or capris, but we’ll see about that. For winter, more cardigans are a must, and would get a lot of wear. I’d also like to make more long-sleeved shirts, as last year I relied a lot on store bought button down shirts and sweaters to keep me warm. Overall, I am determined to enjoy the next phase of my garment sewing journey and I won’t let setbacks discourage me. We all need clothes to wear and making my own is a worthwhile endeavor.

Me-Made-May '16: Week 3

This week was rather wet and cold, and reinforced my desire to sew more cardigans soon. I've got my eye on Grainline Studio's Driftless Cardigan pattern. My me-made wardrobe leans heavily towards spring/summer, and I'm hoping to change that come fall and winter this year.

Me-Made-May ’16: Week 2

Week 2 of Me-Made-May has come and gone, and what a weird week it was. The weather was all over the place! It started out drizzly and in the low sixties, was dry and in the seventies and eighties for a few days, then went back to being cold and wet. In fact, Saturday I had dressed for nice weather in the morning, based on the previous day's heat, and didn’t realize how cold and wet it was until I went outside to take an outfit photo. Needless to say, I spent most of the day inside, where it was warm and dry. Next week's forecast is less volatile, thankfully.

Me-Made-May ’16: Week 1

Wow! The first week of Me-Made-May is already over! I had a busy week at work and barely managed to squeeze in daily outfit photos. Luckily Sunday was a sewing day at my mom’s house, so I finished up a new Akita blouse before things got hectic. I redrafted it to avoid the issues I had with my last two versions, and I am super happy with it. In fact, I feel like I’m regaining my garment sewjo, which has been missing for quite some time. I credit Me-Made-May with giving me the jump-start I needed. Here’s hoping that I can keep up the momentum!

Me-Made-May ’16 Pledge

Can you believe that May is just a few short days away? That means that it is almost time for Me-Made-May, the month-long event when the sewing community is encouraged to wear and celebrate handmade clothing. It just so happens that the Lizzy House Dress Contest overlaps with Me-Made-May, so I am going to combine the two. Here is my pledge for this year:

“I, Rachel of www.snippetsofsweetness.com and @snippetsofsweetness, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '16. I endeavor to wear at least one me-made garment each day for the duration of May 2016, and to sew a new dress for the Lizzy House Dress Contest.”

As in previous years, I plan to post weekly summaries on this blog, and daily photos on Instagram. Speaking of previous years, here are my photo mosaics of Me-Made-May ’14 and Me-Made-May ’15, since blog posts are more fun with photos.

Me-Made-May '15: Week 5 and Summary

The end of May means the end of Me-Made-May. This was my second time participating, and I would definitely call it a success! I had pledged to wear at least one me-made garment every day, and to sew something with rayon, and I accomplished both. In fact, on several days I wore more than one handmade garment, and one day I managed to fit in four!

Over the course of the month, I wore twenty-one unique handmade garments, which I made from ten different patterns. Three of those items were made this month: my first ClĂ©mence Skirt, my third Aberdeen Tunic and my fourth Staple Dress. One of the garments, the Twinkle Twinkle Wiksten tank I made in 2013, was ruined due to a laundry mishap. The most frequently worn item was my Basic Black Aberdeen Tunic, and it’s no surprise that the pattern I wore the most was the Aberdeen Tunic, which showed up a total of ten times. The Julia Cardigan was a close second, at nine times. The only handmade garment in my closet that I didn’t wear was my Oslo Cardigan, so it may be time to donate it.

For the daily photographs, this year I set up my tripod inside our house, next to a window. While it was an improvement over last year’s smartphone photos in front of our door, it still left something to be desired. Most days, it was a little darker than I would have liked, and the limited space meant I cropped my feet out of every picture. Oh well, I have a year to figure out how to improve on this year’s photography.

I love participating in Me-Made-May and following along with other people on Instagram. What I enjoy most about the event, though, is recording my daily outfits and using that data to reflect on what direction I want to take my garment sewing next. Right now, I am conflicted on a couple of points. With the help of the Wardrobe Architect challenge, I have been moving towards a more cohesive capsule wardrobe. However, during this month, I got so bored with my clothes, that I impulsively whipped up the Crimson Poppies Aberdeen Tunic, which I love, and also brought out my two cat themed shirts that had been previously banished because they were the “wrong” colors. Going forward, I need to balance boring but useful staples with quirky and fun pieces that bring me joy. The other point I’m waffling on is the tension between my tendency to remake the same pattern over and over again and the need to try new patterns. I really enjoy making the same thing over and over again, but when I put thirty-one pictures of what I wore this month side-by-side, it looks a little boring, especially when I wear the same pattern two days in a row. There are times when I want to make seven of the same shirt and wear it every day of the week, and times when I want to dress more creatively. I’m not going to stop sewing repeats of the same pattern, but I am going to try to be more thoughtful about it, and intentionally try new patterns. I will admit that one of the reasons I make the same thing repeatedly is that I dislike both assembling PDFs and tracing patterns, so I tend to just reach for my already prepared patterns. I need to get over that.

Here are the details for Week 5:

Monday, May 25, 2015: Cattitude Wiksten Tank, Basic Black Julia Cardigan
Tuesday, May 26, 2015: Crimson Poppies Aberdeen Tunic, Navy Julia Cardigan
Wednesday, May 27, 2015: Basic Black Plantain Tee
Thursday, May 28, 2015: Pearl Bracelet Wiksten Tank, Cotton + Steel XOXO Clémence Skirt
Friday, May 29, 2015: Domino Staple Dress
Saturday, May 30, 2015: Basic Black Aberdeen Tunic
Sunday, May 31, 2015: Cotton + Steel Gemstone Staple Dress (not yet blogged)

I’m actually kind of sad that Me-Made-May is over and can’t wait until next May!

Me-Made-May ’15: Week 4

The fourth week of Me-Made-May is over and now we’re headed into the home stretch! At this point of the month, I’m somewhat sick of selfies and wearing variations of the same things over and over again. Previously, I had been trying to stick to the garments that fit within my Wardrobe Architect color scheme, but my capsule wardrobe was a little too cohesive and I got bored. Craving a little variety, I returned my two Catnap fabric shirts to my closet. They’re not in “my colors,” but they sure are fun!

Me-Made-May ’15: Week 3

Can you believe that May is already halfway over? At this rate, it will be June before we know it. As far as Me-Made-May goes, this week was a good one. In spite of the fact that one of my Wiksten tanks bit the dust due to a laundry accident, the week improved from there. I was able to revive my black Plantain tee, which had been tossed in the “doesn’t fit” pile. With jeans, it’s not long enough, but it’s perfect with my new ClĂ©mence Skirt. Add a Julia Cardigan and some Manila Leggings, and you’ve got a Me-Made-Day with four different handmade items! I was pretty stoked about that one. Also, I was getting bored with all the black and dark blue in my wardrobe, so I whipped up a new Aberdeen Tunic in brighter colors. That’s what I call a good week.

Me-Made-May ’15: Week 2

Well, the second week of Me-Made-May has come and gone. It’s fascinating to record what you wear every day and uncover your unconscious fashion quirks. For example, twice this past week, I wore a Wiksten Tank/Julia Cardigan combo without realizing it. Oops. I also wore the same Aberdeen Tunic twice this week. That was on purpose because I really wanted to wear it with the ClĂ©mence Skirt that I finished just in time to wear on Mother’s Day. More on that later.

Me-Made-May ’15: Week 1

Three days of Me-Made-May down, twenty-eight to go! So far, it has been fun to compare my progress with last year’s Me-Made-May. Day 1 and Day 2 were new outfits that figured knit items, but Day 3 was unintentionally a close repeat of last year’s Day 26. I guess I’m pretty predictable.

This year, I’m trying a new location for my photos, since my wardrobe full of dark colors doesn’t lend itself to being photographed in front of a black door. I’m also using a tripod (thanks, Dad!) instead of asking my long-suffering and under-appreciated husband to take the pictures. The tripod has proven irresistible to my four-year-old, so I let her “help” me take photos this weekend. Thus, the “creatively” framed Day 2 picture. Here’s to encouraging creativity in our children early!

Me-Made-May ‘15

Last year, I had a blast participating in Me-Made-May, so of course I’m going to join in again this year. I reread my posts from 2014, and it was a lot of fun seeing how much my garment sewing game has improved over the course of a year. Last year, my handmade wardrobe consisted of ten items: seven shirts and three dresses sewn from only four different patterns. This year, even after my decluttering exercise and putting away fall/winter pieces, I have fifteen items for my spring/summer me-made wardrobe: nine shirts, two dresses, three cardigans and one pair of leggings, made from seven unique patterns. I hope to have a few more garments under my belt by the time the sun sets on May 31, but we’ll see. Me-Made-May is about wearing your handmade garments, not about panic sewing more. Here’s my pledge for this year:

‘I, Rachel of Snippets of Sweetness, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’15. I endeavor to wear at least one handmade garment each day for the duration of May 2015 and to make one garment out of rayon.’

Like last year, I will post weekly updates on my blog, but will be posting more frequently on Instagram (@snippetsofsweetness).

Celebration Belcarra Blouse

Isn’t funny how haphazardly we discover things? Partway through Me-Made-May, I was lamenting my lack of warm weather pants and decided to research potential sewing patterns. I had read about Sewaholic’s Thurlow Trousers, so I looked them up online. While I was poking around the website, I stumbled across a new shirt pattern, the Belcarra Blouse. All thoughts of sewing pants swiftly fled my mind. I had also been on the lookout for an easy but flattering shirt pattern with sleeves, and I was pretty sure I had found it. In my haste, I bought the PDF version and spent an hour taping together the numerous pages instead of buying the physical pattern and waiting for it to arrive via snail mail. While the page margins were rather large, the printing instructions allow you to only print what you need, which I liked.

View A called for 2.25 yards of fabric for my size. I was hard pressed to find that much of anything in my stash. Luckily I had received 3 yards of Celebrate by Hoffman Fabrics as a gift a while back. Since Sewaholic Patterns are drafted for a pear-shaped body, my measurements matched one of the sizes almost perfectly, and my hopes were high as I cut out the pattern pieces. I was not disappointed.

Several steps in the instructions called for partial seams, which I am not particularly fond of. I am, however, uncommonly fond of French seams, so I decided to see if I could made this shirt with all French seams. It got a little dicey where the cuffs meet the sleeves under the arm, but it turned out well enough in the end.

In fact, the entire shirt turned out well! The neck is a tad wide, but the pattern itself is so quick, I had no problem making a couple adjustments and whipping up another one right away. More on that later. For now, all you need to know is that the Belcarra Blouse is my new favorite pattern. Sorry, Wiksten Tank. Belcarra has sleeves.

Me-Made-May: Week 5

Well, there you have it. My first Me-Made-May is over and done with. I signed up because I thought it would be fun and challenging, but I had no idea how invigorating it would be! Over the course one month, I wore a piece of handmade clothing every day, sewed with voile for the first time, graded and altered a pattern for the first time, discovered a new favorite pattern and made three shirts! Perhaps even more impressive, I noticed a shift in my attitude towards clothes. Instead of thinking “I want to buy that,” I now catch myself thinking “I want to make that.” Instead of feeling like I have nothing to wear because I don’t like how I look in ready-to-wear clothes, now I can easily pull together a week’s worth of outfits that make me feel confident and proud of my accomplishments. That shift in attitude is one I am very happy with.

Of all the different aspects of this challenge, it was the daily photographs that I found most difficult. I was fortunate than my incredibly patient husband was willing to snap a few smartphone photos of me every day as we left the house. There were a couple days when our mornings were just too hectic to remember or care about the picture, but we always managed to squeeze one in before nightfall. Looking back at the pictures, it’s fascinating to see how the light in the front yard changed from day to day and from morning to late afternoon. Viewing the month’s pictures also reveals holes in my spring/summer wardrobe.

At the conclusion of this month, I’m happy with how I did, and I’m excited to continue my handmade wardrobe journey. Who knows, maybe for next year’s Me-Made-May, I’ll be wearing knits and pants! One can only hope.

Pastry Line Staple Tunic

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that I made a few shirts recently. Part of my Me-Made-May’14 pledge was to make one garment out of a new-to-me pattern or fabric type. Based on what I had on hand, I decided to modify the Staple Dress pattern by April Rhodes to make a top. While I enjoyed making my previous Staples Dresses, I felt that I could adjust the fit and length to make something that I could wear more often, as I don’t wear dresses very often.

To adjust the pattern to match the picture in my head, I started by grading from a medium in the shoulders to a large in the hips. That wasn’t as daunting as I thought it would be, but by the time I had finished adjusting the hemline to my satisfaction, two hours had passed! Pattern modification is not for the faint of heart, or those short on time.

The fabric I used was a Pastry Line voile by Anna Maria Horner that had been languishing in my stash for some time. This was my first time working with voile and it is every bit as nice as everyone says it is! While I found it a little more delicate than quilting cotton, it was still easy to work with. Best of all, it was softer and more pleasant to wear, and washed up nicely. I’m really happy that companies like Art Gallery Fabrics are including more voile options to coordinate with their quilting cotton offerings. I want more awesome prints in soft, easy-to-use fabrics!

After several days of deliberation, I decided to forgo the elastic shirring. The result is a comfy and casual shirt that can be worn out or tucked in. It think it will be lovely to wear in spring and summer. This shirt was definitely a confidence booster, as I managed to try a couple new things successfully.

Yes, I did mention at the beginning of this post that I made more than one shirt. Tune in later for more!

Me-Made-May’14: Week 4

As the end of Me-Made-May creeps ever closer, I find it interesting to stop and reflect not only on the garments, but on the process of participating in this event as well. While the daily pictures are getting old, I am still enjoying sharing them, as well as perusing others’ progress on Instagram. Wearing me-made garments is definitely not growing old. In fact, now it seems only natural to be wearing handmade daily.

Also noteworthy is that I finished a new top last week! I used the new Belcarra Blouse pattern by Sewaholic Patterns and loved it. It’s such a fun pattern that I’ve already started a second one. There’s a sew-along in progress, if anyone is interested.

Me-Made-May’14: Week 3

Can you believe that May is more than halfway over? For Me-Made-May Week #3, I made a conscious effort to branch out from my standard Wiksten Tank/sweater/jeans/Toms uniform. For Mother’s Day, I wore the dressiest handmade garment I have: my Crazy Cat Lady Dress. While I’m still disappointed with it, the fit issues were adequately covered up with a sweater, and I received a few compliments throughout the day. This week was the first time since I finished this dress that I seriously considered trying this pattern again, as it really is quite comfy.

Speaking of trying patterns again, I closed out the week with not one, but two Staple outfits: my Domino Staple Dress from last year and my recently finished Staple Tunic, which I adapted from the Staple Dress pattern. I’m really pleased with how the Staple Tunic turned out, and will write up a separate blog post later on. All in all, I’m happy with my Me-Made-May outfits so far.

Me-Made-May’14: Week 2

Week 2 of Me-Made-May has been successfully completed! Since this event is all about actually wearing what you sew, I pulled out a garment that I was so underwhelmed by when it was finished that I never blogged about it and never even consider wearing it. Last fall, I sewed up a black Staple Dress as part of a costume. Since I was under a deadline, I cut corners and I’m not pleased with the end result. Some of the French seams are messy. It’s fine for a casual day with family, but I wouldn’t wear it around anyone I’m trying to impress. I also left off the pockets, so when I wear it, I’m constantly trying to put my cell phone in nonexistent pockets, which is rather annoying. Lesson learned: haste makes waste. The rest of the week, I relied on my ubiquitous Wiksten tanks.

Me-Made-May’14: Week 1

Well, I guess I shouldnt be surprised that for the first week of Me-Made-May’14, I wore a different Wiksten tank every day. Hopefully I’ll branch out a little as the month goes on. Here’s a breakdown of the handmade items I wore each day last week.

Spring Top Sewalong and Me-Made-May

I don’t know what it is about Spring that makes me want to sew garments, but it does. After a brief respite following my semi-failed Catnap Dress, I am once again excited about sewing my own clothes. It doesn’t hurt that there are currently two online events that I’d like to participate in: the Spring Top Sewalong, which encourages the making of garments and Me-Made-May, which encourages the wearing of handmade items. They dovetail nicely, as during the first event (April 14-May 11) I can make tops to wear for the duration of the second event (May 1-May 31). In fact, this weekend I started a Wiksten tank out of my Catnap leftovers. Yep, that’s Wiksten tank #5 for this girl. I really need to branch out, as reflected in my Me-Made-May pledge:

'I, Rachel of Snippets of Sweetness, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '14. I endeavor to wear one handmade garment each day for the duration of May 2014 and to make one garment in May 2014 out of a new-to-me pattern or fabric type.'

From my current stash of fabrics and patterns, I have two choices for my new-to-me garment: a modified Staple Dress shirt out of voile, or a Taffy Blouse out of quilting cotton. The voile shirt is the top candidate at the moment, as I suspect I will have better luck with new patterns in the future if I’m comfortable with a wider range of fabric types.

I will post my finishes here on the blog, but feel free to follow along with my progress on Instagram (@snippetsofsweetness) or Flickr (@snippetsofsweetness!).
